Here are just a few of the main subgenres you might hear during IBMA week and beyond: Newgrass: Also called progressive bluegrass, this music has roots in the classic bluegrass sound; but it branches out in new directions, often heavily influenced by rock, pop, jazz or even classical. Sounds like: Punch Brothers, Sam Bush, Alison Krauss, Bela Fleck. Jamgrass: The Grateful Dead wasnt a bluegrass band, but it influenced this subgenre of bluegrass that features the usual instruments (and then some) on songs that start with a groove and journey to who knows?
